Description:
Join us for a reading group session focused on the classic work of Hong Kong ecological writing, Bison by Ng Hui Bun. Dr. Winnie Yee of Comparative Literature at HKU and Dr Jamie Wang of Literature and Cultural Studies at EdUHK will be on hand to offer their reflections on two of the book’s best stories, and to think together about writing nature, the city, and the environment in Hong Kong and the region. All are welcome!
Speakers’ bio
Winnie Yee is Programme Coordinator of MA in Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Hong Kong. She was a fellow in Rachel Carson Center for the Environment and Society at LMU, Munich in 2020 and a fellow at the Joint Center for Advanced Studies “Worldmaking from a Global Perspective: A Dialogue with China” in Germany in 2022. Her research interests are eco-criticism, contemporary Chinese literature and film, Hong Kong culture, Asian independent cinema, and postcolonial theories. She is currently working on a book project exploring the relationship between ecopoetic, Chinese literature and independent film scene, and an edited volume on lives of the Deltas.
Jamie Wang is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies at the Education University of Hong Kong. Her current research is at the intersections of environmental humanities, cultural studies, more-than-human cities and science and technology studies in the context of climate change and environmental injustice. She explores these themes in her current book project Reimagining a More-Than-Human City (Under Contract with the MIT Press). Jamie has a M.A. in writing and literature from Deakin University and a Ph.D. in Environmental Humanities and Cultural Studies from the University of Sydney. She is also an editor, writer and poet.
